Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to 6th grade
Science! I am very excited about
starting my tenth year at Henley Middle School, and hope that you are too!
This year I have some exciting news
to share! I am pursuing National Board
Certification as part of my professional development. In order to complete the portfolios that are
required for certification, I will need to videotape a few lessons and collect
samples of student work. There is a
cover letter explaining this process and a release form that needs to be
completed. Please take a moment to read
over this letter and sign and return the form.
If
you need to reach me, the easiest way to contact me is at dstokes@k12albemarle.org. Otherwise, you can set up an appointment
through the guidance office.
Expectations:
- Projects- Our class will be project-oriented. Almost every unit will have a hands-on project associated with it that will be completed in class. There will be considerable group work involved with most projects.
· Homework-
Homework assignments will be assigned occasionally. Please make sure these assignments are
turned in on time. In addition to formal
homework assignments, reviewing for quizzes and tests is also expected.
- Interactive Notebooks- I will grade interactive notebooks at the end of each unit. Students should keep up with the table of contents in order to keep assignments in the correct order. We will stress the importance of making personal connections to our objectives.
Grades:
Grades are based
on homework, notebook checks, labs/projects, quizzes, and tests. I assign point values to each assignment and
the final grade is calculated by dividing the total points earned by the total
points possible.
Unit Topics: This class is an introduction to several
areas of science. This is a very basic
outline.
Observation/Measurement
Scientific
Investigation
Energy
Astronomy
Weather
Watersheds
Matter
Resources
We will learn a
lot this year! Welcome to OUR
class!
Sincerely,
Dana Stokes
